Rupert and his Regained Independence
At Enable and Thrive, we believe no one should face later life challenges alone. When Rupert* came to us, he was in crisis. He had been supported by his social worker to find a flat to rent through the council, prior to this he was homeless. Rupert* was in arrears with 3 different utility accounts and was in significant debt. He was overwhelmed, confused and unsure where to turn.
Rupert* had agreed for us to come on board to support him and for us to reach out to all his utility providers and set up an affordable payment plan to remove the debt over time. He agreed to us applying for State Pension on his behalf, due to recently turning state pension age. Rupert* was also entitled to Pension Credit, which he had no idea about so our Benefits Advisor got to work on this.
However, this application was unexpectedly refused. The reason? It turned out he had an old workplace pension - something he had completely forgotten about. Understandably, this discovery caused stress and uncertainty for him. Rupert* didn’t have the means to access financial advice, nor the confidence to manage complex paperwork.
That’s where we stepped in.
Our team took action immediately. We supported Rupert* to locate his pension and he was happy for us to access the funds on his behalf, to improve his quality of life. We provided the pension company with the Lasting Power of Attorney document, and then assisted Rupert* through the application process, including several forms, meetings and phone calls to ensure he understood every step of the way.
Eventually, after weeks of communication, the pension funds were released. Rupert* now has the financial security to live a fuller, more comfortable life - something that simply wouldn’t have been possible without the right support.
This is what we do at Enable and Thrive. We advocate, support, and safeguard vulnerable individuals every step of the way - because everyone deserves to live with dignity and peace of mind.
