Janet and Graham's Journey

Janet, a 53-year-old woman living with a learning disability and schizophrenia, was referred to us by her family, who lived abroad. Her husband, Graham, an older man who had been her primary caregiver, was diagnosed with dementia and kidney failure just before the Covid pandemic. As his health deteriorated, Janet found herself struggling to care for him, and their already poor diet began to take a further toll on his condition. Doctors told us Graham might only have a few months to live.

Despite the grim prognosis, we began working closely with Janet and Graham, building a relationship based on trust. We arranged for regular carers and helped with food shopping, supporting them both during an incredibly difficult time. Miraculously, Graham’s health began to improve, defying expectations, and he lived for another three years—an extra time that gave them both precious moments together.

However, it became increasingly clear that Janet wouldn't be able to cope on her own once Graham passed. We began making plans for their future, arranging for them to move into assisted living. This meant selling their home and adapting a new space to fit their needs. We managed the transition with as little disruption as possible, ensuring that both Janet and Graham could settle into their new home without feeling overwhelmed.

Before Graham’s health declined further, Janet expressed one heartfelt wish: to go on one last holiday with him to Cornwall, the place they had honeymooned many years before. It was a deeply sentimental request, and we were determined to make it happen. We arranged for two carers to accompany them to a holiday home in Cornwall, coordinating every detail—from liaising with the property owners to ensuring groceries were delivered and transportation was arranged. For one week, they were able to relive memories of happier times, and it was a beautiful, bittersweet final adventure together.

Sadly, Graham passed away at the end of 2023. Yet, our commitment to Janet didn’t end there. We continue to support her through the ongoing challenges she faces, always remembering the love and devotion she and Graham shared, and the small but significant ways we were able to help give them a little more time and joy together.
