World Elder Abuse Awareness Day 2026

Monday 15th June 2026 marks World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD). A global moment to shine a light on an issue that too often remains hidden in plain sight.

This year’s message is clear:
“Beyond awareness: making elder abuse prevention work.”[un.org]

At Enable, this message resonates deeply with the work we do every day, supporting individuals and families through some of life’s most complex and vulnerable moments.

What is Elder Abuse & Why Does It Matter?

Elder abuse is defined as any act (or failure to act) within a relationship of trust that causes harm or distress to an older person. [worldelder...reness.com]

It can take many forms, including:

  • Financial abuse (misuse of money or assets)

  • Neglect (failing to meet basic needs)

  • Emotional or psychological harm

  • Physical abuse

  • Coercion or control

Globally, this is not a rare issue. Research suggests that around 1 in 6 older adults experience some form of abuse each year. [who.int]

Closer to home, safeguarding data in England recorded over 640,000 concerns of abuse in 2024 – 2025, highlighting the scale of the issue. [gov.uk]

Yet, many cases go unreported, often due to fear, dependency, or isolation.

Why Elder Abuse Is Often Hidden

Unlike many other forms of harm, elder abuse frequently happens behind closed doors, and often involves someone the individual knows or relies on.

Older people may:

  • Feel ashamed or afraid to speak out

  • Depend on the abuser for care or support

  • Not recognise what they’re experiencing as abuse

  • Be socially isolated or overlooked

This is why awareness alone is not enough.

Recognising the Signs

Spotting early indicators can make all the difference. Some common warning signs include:

  • Unexplained injuries or frequent “accidents”

  • Sudden changes in behaviour, mood, or confidence

  • Withdrawal from family, friends, or usual activities

  • Poor hygiene, weight loss, or unmet care needs

  • Unusual financial activity or missing money

A key signal is often a noticeable change in behaviour or wellbeing, especially when there’s no clear explanation. [compass.info]

WEAAD 2026: From Awareness to Action

This year’s global focus challenges us to go further, to turn awareness into real, practical change.

That means:

Breaking isolation

Loneliness increases vulnerability. Staying connected, as families, neighbours, and professionals, is one of the strongest protective factors.

Strengthening safeguarding systems

Better coordination across financial, legal, property, health and care services is essential to protect individuals effectively. [un.org]

Encouraging conversations

Talking openly about elder abuse helps remove stigma and empowers people to seek help sooner.

How Enable Supports Safer, More Secure Living

At Enable, we see first-hand how complex life can become, particularly when health, finances, property and legal responsibilities overlap.

Our role is to provide trusted, professional support that safeguards wellbeing and independence, including:

  • Managing finances and protecting against financial exploitation

  • Coordinating care and supporting healthcare decisions

  • Supporting individuals through major life transitions

  • Acting in clients’ best interests with transparency and integrity

By bridging the gap between care, finance, property, legal and practical support, we help reduce risk and ensure nothing falls through the cracks.

What You Can Do Today

WEAAD is not just about organisations, it’s about all of us.

Here are simple but powerful steps you can take:

  • ✅ Check in regularly with older relatives, friends, or neighbours

  • ✅ Trust your instincts, if something doesn’t feel right, speak up

  • ✅ Learn the signs of abuse and share them with others

  • ✅ Seek professional advice if you’re unsure

If someone is in immediate danger, always contact emergency services. Otherwise, concerns can be raised through local safeguarding teams or support services such as Hourglass in the UK.

Elder abuse is a serious human rights issue, but it is also preventable. [social.desa.un.org]

This World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, let’s move beyond simply recognising the problem and instead focus on creating safer, more supportive environments for older people to thrive.

Because everyone deserves to age with dignity, respect, and peace of mind.

If you or a loved one require support and oversight of their health, care, financial or property matters.
