Winter Fuel Payment Restored - Are You Eligible?

Government Winter Fuel Payment Announcement - 9th June 2025

The government has announced the return of the Winter Fuel Payment for the winter of 2025/26 - and it’s welcome news for older people worried about energy costs.

Eligibility

This payment will now be available to anyone:

  • Over State Pension age (born on or before 21st September 1959)

  • With an individual income of £35,000 or less.

  • In a household that includes at least one person over State Pension age during the qualifying week.

Payment

Households could receive £200, or £300 if someone is aged 80 or over - helping to ease the pressure during colder months. This will be dependent on your financial and living situation.

Most eligible people will receive the payment automatically in November or December 2025.

Please note, those that are no longer eligible will be expected to repay this money to the DWP, unless you have opted out.

Be Scam Aware

✅ Do’s

  • Do wait for the payment automatically – you don’t need to apply if you’ve had it before.

  • Do check official letters from the DWP (Department for Work and Pensions) for information.

  • Do use GOV.UK if you need to confirm payment dates or eligibility.

  • Do contact the Winter Fuel Payment Centre directly if you’re unsure about anything.

  • Do protect your personal details – keep your National Insurance number and bank details private.

❌ Don’ts

  • Don’t share personal or bank details with anyone who contacts you unexpectedly.

  • Don’t click on links in emails or texts claiming to be about your Winter Fuel Payment.

  • Don’t believe messages saying you need to “apply” or “update details” to get paid – that’s a scam.

  • Don’t reply to suspicious calls or messages – hang up and contact DWP directly.

  • Don’t rush – scammers try to create urgency; take your time to check first.
